Father Of Short Messaging Service (SMS), Matti Makkonen died on Friday at the age of 63 following serious illness, reported by press. Matti was from Finland.
SMS, or -- Short Messaging Service, was an idea that Matti Makkonen first suggested at a Telecoms conference in 1984, but it was only on -- December 3 in 1992 that the first text message was sent.
Speaking on the 20th anniversary of the first text message, Makkonen said he considered the development of -- SMS a joint effort and that it was Nokia who helped to popularize the service. “The real launch of the service, as I see it, was when Nokia introduced the first phone that enabled easy writing of messages (Nokia 2010 in 1994),” he had said.
